GHG Accounting and Clean Technology: A Pathway to Profit Volume 1, Issue 1
Authors: Tom Baumann, ClimateCHECK
Abstract:
The lack of an approved standard for quantifying, monitoring and managing greenhouse-gas (GHG) credits and the substantial amounts of time and money needed to develop one has limited the large-scale adoption of emerging clean technologies. Currently, there are many such procedures being used, ranging from in-house engineering calculations to full life-cycle assessments and complex computer modeling. The administrative obstacles created by GHG standards can delay the entry of new technologies into the carbon market, because potential revenues cannot be realized without a method of measuring GHG reductions that allows for an “apples to apples” comparison across technologies and projects. This paper argues that a new standardization process would allow for the efficient and effective development of “technology specific” GHG-accounting protocols and thus accelerate the commercialization of clean technologies.
